Note Card paragraph 9/14/09
In Maycomb County, there are lots of people that Scout encounters. Her brother is one of her biggest influences. He was a tough kid though, cause he broke his arm and he wasn't even self concious about it. Scout explains, "he could have cared less, long as he could pass and punt." It means he didn't care that he had a cast on his arm, and he didn't care if he looked stupid with it, as long as he could still play sports. Another person that Scout knows is Walter Cunningham. Walter is from a very poor farming family, the kids have to stay home and help work instead of getting an education. Walter once said, "Reason I can't pass the first grade, Mr. Finch, is i've had to stay over spring and help papa with the choppin'. It was hard for him to stay caught up in school when he had to help his dad, so he wasn't able to pass the first grade. The last person I'll tell you about is Miss Maudie. She is an older lady who konws what is going on in the town. She is smart because she has been around for a long time. She told Scout, "you know old Mr. Radley was a footwashing baptist?" She was trying to say that Mr. Radley used to be a good person, but he has changed a lot and is now a different person.

"I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess." (Lee 77) -Atticus

Atticus explains to his daughter, "I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess."

Atticus is defending Tom Robinson in the courtroom. Scout gets in a fight at school because Cecil Jacobs makes fun of him, calling him a "nigger lover." When Scout discusses this with her father, he explains to her that he feels honored to help out Mr. Robinson. Atticus feels like if he denied this man his help, he wouldn't be a noble man. He is willing to save his dignity and do what he knows is right. When Scout asks why, explains this to her saying, "Because I could never ask you to mind me again, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally, this one's mine i guess." Atticus knows he isn't going to win this case, but by saying this to Scout he shows her how to persist when you know you're doing the ethical thing, and he also shows us how compassionate of a person he is toward people of every race.

Explaining quotes:

I already explained my quote in the paragraph when i said: "Atticus knows he isn't going to win this case, but by saying this to Scout he shows her how to persist when you know you're doing the ethical thing, and he also shows us how compassionate of a person he is toward people of every race."

This quote really showed me how great of a man atticus was. He is willing to stand up for this man and do everything he can to help him, even though he knows he doesn't have a chance beause Tom Robinson is colored. Just the honor shown in this quote really helped me understand his dedication to his dignity and his pride.
